Beginner - Intermediate - Integrated Pest Management - Beekeeping Summer Course's - 2024

 

 Introductory Beekeeping Workshop

2024- June -2nd, 2024 - (Classroom and "Hands-On" sessions in the bee yard) Includes an Ontario Beekeeping Manual. 

 

Beekeeping has a steep learning curve. Usually, the first year is the most daunting, with so many decisions that have to be made, some even before you get bees.

Students will learn budget, equipment needed, management techniques, record keeping, bee yard location, honey production, how do I get started, seasonal management, time and energy that keeping bees requires, benefits of beekeeping, obtaining bees-permit-inspected by a provincial bee inspector. 

Beekeeping regulations in Ontario

This course will outline some of the main challenges that are likely to come up and give you a starting point for planning and to become a successful beekeeper.

Course Dates: June 2, 2024  TIMES - 9am to 4pm

9am – Upstairs at Anderson’s Independent Grocer, 455 McNeely Ave., Carleton Place, K7C 4S6

Then to Lacelle’s Apiary  “for hands on the hives”  at 126 Spruce Drive, Carleton Place, Ont. K7C 3P1

 Integrated Pest Management Course ( IPM ) June 9th, 2024 

(Classroom and "Hands-On" sessions in the bee yard- includes an OBA Integrated Pest Management Manual.

 An Introduction to Honey Bee Pests and Diseases in Ontario
(What Integrated Pest Management Means for Today’s Beekeeper)

       

This course is designed to teach beekeepers to effectively manage pests and diseases to maintain healthy colonies.

This workshop includes classroom and hands on in the beeyard.  Please bring your safety equipment - will be supplied if necessary.   

Beekeepers will learn multiple tactics to reduce pest populations' using multiple tools to find the most effective, least intrusive solutions to problems.

Learn to identify, prevent, and manage.

  • Pests and diseases
  • Viruses
  • Signs of poor health

The following topics are reviewed: The History of Beekeeping in Ontario, Honey Bee Biology, Beekeeping equipment, Honey production, Feeding and Wintering, Queen Introduction and Colony Numbers, A Season of Beekeeping, Organics, Pollination, Hive products,Bio-Security and Ontario Regulations. Students acquire the knowledge that guides them for the coming beekeeping season.
